Fatumata Kaba
ASEP Alumni
Class of 2007

During my three years at Tenacity, my family, friends, and teachers have seen a huge change in me.  My love for reading has expanded and I love tennis with a passion.  Tenacity has definitely made a huge impact in my life and I'm glad that I decided to join.  It's a place where you don't have to be afraid to love reading or just being yourself...

ALUMNI SERVICES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if a student wants access to alumni services but didn’t graduate from ASEP?

Who makes up the Tenacity Alumni Network?

Tenacity alumni are graduates of our After School Excellence Program (ASEP). Those who fulfill their commitment to program and graduate at the end of their 8th grade year after 2-3 years of participation are entitled to an array of services and support throughout high school and beyond.

How many alumni are there?

Currently we have 148 alumni. As the ASEP program grows each year, so does our graduating 8th grade class. Our first graduating class in 2001 numbered only five, and seven years later in 2008, we had 40 graduates. We anticipate that our total number of graduates will grow even more drastically in the Spring of 2009, as one of our ASEP sites alone is expecting over 30 8th grade participants.

What is the goal of Alumni Services?

The goal of Alumni Services is to build upon the positive impact of the ASEP program and continue to ensure that our program graduates will grow into successful and productive young adults, complete high school, and move on into the next phase of life, whether it is attending a 2- or 4-year college, trade school, or beginning a promising career.

What kinds of programs and services do you provide to alumni?

Starting when our students are still in the 8th grade, Alumni Services assists them with the high school selection process. Later, we continue to offer support to ASEP graduates as they move through their challenging high school years and beyond. We do this by offering educational, social, and emotional support through formal and informal programs and services. This includes regular check-ins throughout high school, tutoring and test preparation (e.g. SAT, MCAS), connections to academic enrichment programs, job and volunteer opportunities, ongoing tennis opportunities, scholarship opportunities, and assistance with college selection and financial aid processes. We work hard to maintain connections to our alumni; we do this through consistent tracking, social and recreational alumni events, and through our web site, which includes an “for alumni only” password-protected section.

What if a student wants access to alumni services but didn’t graduate from ASEP?

We recognize that some kids may have wished to fulfill their commitment to ASEP, and are committed and loyal to Tenacity, but couldn’t finish the program due to circumstances beyond their control (e.g. they moved or switched schools). For these rare circumstances, students who wish to become “honorary” alumni and have access to all the services and opportunities of the Alumni Program may go through an application process. A panel will be assembled to review each application, and we will decide on a case-by-case basis who may become honorary alumni.
